Hi Carolina, welcome to VQS, Tell us a little bit about you and your music.

Hi! I’m Carolina Lee Li, thank you for having me! I’m a singer-songwriter/dancer, originally from Lima, Peru, and based in LA. Since I was little I’ve always been influenced by pop music and after years of exploring and experimenting with different styles, I’ve finally found my own sound.
My music is a self-expression of my femininity and a representation of my womanhood. I previously released two singles: “Better Off on My Own” and “Decoding signs“, both of which were written from my female perspective in relation to my romantic life.

So funny, I guess I’ve written these songs since I felt that my dating life wasn’t successful.

“Instead of holding back to frustrations from unsuccessful relationships, I turned those feelings into songs, embracing the situation from my personal perspective.” – Carolina Lee Li

Now, I’ve got an upcoming single called “2cute4u.kbye”, which I wrote at about the same time that I did “Decoding signs“, so the theme is pretty much similar and the message is super straight forward: “I’m too cute for you, k bye!”

“I wanted to create, support, and contribute to women’s work, at the same time inspire my female audience…Carolina

Congrats on the release! What was your inspiration for this new single?

Released 3/26/21. I wrote this song about the time when my dating life was constantly failing. I guess my immediate response to feeling unappreciated was as straightforward as “it’s ok if it didn’t work out cause at the end of the day I’m still too cute for you… Anyways, Imma leave and say k bye – Peace out! (laughs).
Although each unsuccessful date made me feel constantly rejected, I chose not to take it too seriously by reinforcing my statement of being too cute for these boys. And that was my simple and straight-up inspiration for this bop: “2cute4u.kbye”.

What was your vision for this song? What lessons would you like to impart to your audience?

At that time I was still exploring and experimenting with my sound elements, so I worked with my good friend and music producer Alyssa (Cuja) on the demo for this song. Later on, I contacted Ali Stone, to finish the production of 2cute4u.kbye. I knew I definitely needed women working on this project. Afterward, I decided to not only have a female contribution on the music side but also to have a woman contributing to everything else that was not related to the sound aspect.
So this project was 90% made by women, including the photographer for the art cover, the logo editor, art cover designer, make-up artist, songwriter, music producers, mastering engineer, among others. I wanted to create, support, and contribute to women’s work, at the same time inspire my female audience with my simple and straight-up message of being too cute to deal with BS.

2020 was a very reflective and internal year which led me to transition into a more authentic sound.

What is your favorite part of this song?

“bye, bye, bye, bye. Too much of a woman for you. k bye!” – You hear it and you know that it will get stuck in your head.

Anything else we should know about it? Future releases? Upcoming events?

I definitely have more releases coming with a new sound and more intentional message of my female and cultural purpose.

2021 is coming with more releases that I’m excited to share! 2cute4u.kbye was supposed to be released in the mid-2020s but the pandemic slowed down this project. Although the song was ready last year, I still had to complete the artwork and everything else that wasn’t related to the sound, that’s why it took a bit longer to have the entire single ready. But now I’m happy and excited to finally share it!
