NEW SINGLE
“90 Miles” represents a transition for our project—and also marks the start of a new chapter.
Kristina, welcome to VQS! Tell us a little bit about you and your music.
Hi, thank you so much! My name is Kristina Miranda, and I’m the lead singer in an alt-rock outfit from Los Angeles called High Grass. Our story began in 2009 with my arrival in Cuba to record a solo album. There, I met my future husband and bandmate, guitarist Marciel Miranda. I moved from Moscow to Havana, and we started to write music together and created High Grass.
At the end of 2015, our band started to attract media attention and was nominated at the Award TV show “Cuerda Viva” for “Best Rock Band of Cuba.” Shortly after, we made the decision to try our music overseas. In 2017, after traveling and visiting several American states and cities, we settled in Los Angeles. It was so exciting. We started to explore the LA music scene, performing at local festivals and venues.
In May 2020, we dropped our debut EP “The Black Door”, and in December, we released our single “90 Miles”. The song was mixed by Grammy-winning producer, Jacquire King (Kings of Leon, Norah Jones, Cold War Kids), who was the one to grasp the potential in our music.
“90 Miles” symbolizes freedom for some and an insurmountable distance for others in Cuba.
Congrats on the release! What was your inspiration for this song?
Released 12/04/20. We wrote this song back in Havana. Referencing the distance between the US and Cuba, “90 Miles” reflects the strained political relations between the two countries. We wanted to shine some light on the situation to show the world what is happening.
During these challenging times, I feel the song may resonate not only with Cuban people but with anyone who is apart from their loved ones. We want them to know they are not alone.
What is your favorite part of the song?
I love the chorus of the song and also the drum solo going into the bridge is one of my favorite parts. It sparks my imagination, and it seems almost like the storm turns into a calm sea.
Anything else we should know about it? Future releases? Upcoming events?
Yes, there is still more to come from our band! At the beginning of 2021, we are planning to release a series of singles. One of our songs is the result of collaboration with such amazing artists as Christian Paschall (Maren Morris, Alicia Keys, David Crowder) and Matt Bissonette (Elton John, Ringo Starr). We will unveil more details after Christmas!
