“A strong value of consistency can take you further into your goals than you may think.” – Ian Charlie

ian charlie

Hi Ian, thank you for joining us today at VQS. Take us back in time to how you first fell in love with music.

It all started when I was only in the 3rd grade. My eldest brother who happened to be studying abroad came home for his school break/holiday. He had a Yamaha Acoustic Guitar that I will never forget for it was one of my favorites and the one that started it all for me. With that being said It was a Yamaha FG-300. He then taught me a few chords and how to hold the guitar properly.

I fell in love with it within a few moments of the guitar being in my hands.

I’m not sure how else to describe this feeling I had but it gave me life and a voice I didn’t know existed.. He happened to gift me with that guitar later on! After I had a guitar I started taking classical guitar lessons to assure I had the correct training on the instrument.

My passion for music grew faster over the years and I had dreams of becoming a real guitar hero.

Clearly that changed over time and I had more dreams and goals with the guitar but it was a great first dream with it. There was still something more I had to offer and that was to become a composer/producer.
I’ll never forget that day when I finally realized my overall goal with the guitar and music. When I was attending the Berklee College of Music, I happened to take my first arranging for horns class in which my arrangements were played by live musicians!

That feeling for the first time was a feeling I’ll never forget.

To hear something you took hours to write then put into reality was something I’ve never experienced. I knew from that moment on, this is what I was put here on earth to do. This is ME!

What new projects are you working on now?

Walla is a band that I’ve been part of for years. We are an unsigned LA Based Indie pop/indie rock band with a hit that made close to 40 million stream on Spotify and a lot of radio airplay. Our latest single called “The Draw” recently featured in NBA Games on ESPN. The bandmates and I have put our heart and souls into this group and we keep releasing singles and more to come.

Another project I’m currently working on is with artist Hannah Ureste! She is a trumpet player from the Bay Area who happens to be an amazing friend to me and a talented individual. Her vision for her music is exactly what I’m going for and the music we create clearly shows we are on the same wave.
I’ve also had the pleasure to work with THE VOICE UK Artist (Name Tba once the song is released 🙂 in which I also have to give respect and honor to great musicians and sessions players on board such as Hal Rosenvelt on drums, Sean Hurley (John Mayer, Alicia Keys etc) on bass, Michelle Pakman (Camilla Cabello & 5 Seconds of Summers) on Cello, also I recently had placement with G-Eazy for doing orchestral version for one of his song which featured on NBA Draft. I’m very blessed and grateful to have that opportunity.

What core values do you believe are necessary for success?

The biggest core value is consistency! I’m a strong believer of this. Without consistency you will see no results from your work. Consistency is so important for a musician and without it we wouldn’t be successful. Consistency shows that you put the hard work and discipline into your craft and people will see your skills immediately instead of having to search “why should I hire them.

A strong value of consistency can take you further into your goals than you may think.

Besides music, I do enjoy working out and just as you need consistency to see growth in music, it goes the same way for working out too. If you hit the gym once a week and eat junk food the majority of the week, you will not see any improvements on your health as well. With this all being said, consistency is what you NEED in life if you want to strive to the top.

I’ve been lucky enough to learn from my mistakes and put the hard work in everyday to get where I am and will continue to have it, so that it’s only up from here on out.

Who have been some of your favorite people/projects to work with?

This is a tough question for I really do enjoy working with certain individuals but the first ones to come to my mind is first of course Hannah Ureste. Her energy in the studio is the same as mine. Not only are we both determined to go to the moon with the music we create, this human never gives up.

She’s always trying to send a positive message to her listeners and really does want to make others smile and eliminate the toxic energies or people around them. Not only does her energy set a strong tone in my studio, we can talk and laugh about non-music related topics too that help us create even stronger music every session we have.
Another one of my favorites would have to be WALLA. I’ve been with this band for years and the bond I have with the guys in the band is more than bandmates. We are family! We’ve hit some great high notes and a few lows but nothing has ever stopped us from creating and trying to reach out to our fans and new listeners.

Though some of the band mates don’t live in the same city, we are still all able to have our own lives and still create our music and still be inspired and I think that’s amazing for a band to have. Not many can still be driven and yet so far from one another.
Olivia Applegate is another great artist I love to work with. She has an amazing personality and is so genuine and humble. It’s tough meeting people like her in the music world let alone Los Angeles. Whenever we work or have worked together we get things done! She is so talented and really knows what she wants and knows how to convey it correctly to where we are on the same page with notes or corrections or directions of where we want the music or vocals to go.

Don Blanquito to top it all off is such an amazing human! This guy brings a different energy than the rest bring. His love and passion for his music is so inspiring and even more so his creativity when it comes to his music. He is so wholehearted and really does care about the music he’s putting out and how it impacts others and even more so his biggest fan, who is his daughter.
I have so much respect for him and when we are in the studio he brings that different flavor that’s needed to spice up the tracks or more ideas. He is always thinking of new ways and better ways to convey his music to listeners as well.
With all this being said, I have so much respect for the people I have mentioned and there are others as well but we will get to them in another interview someday, but for now I highly recommend you check out these talented people that I have the lovely pleasure of working with. People like them really make me realize why I am still doing what I love today.

What future opportunities would you like to be involved with?

There are so many you have no idea. I always try to reach for the moon and so with that being said I would love to be involve in film scoring or have more of my compositions and orchestrations featured on a TV show or movie.
I would love to be involved with more artists who want to reach the moon with me no matter what genre of music we are creating. It would be an honor to share the stage with more big artists whose music really touches others and means something.

My opportunities are limitless and I’m ready for whatever doors open for me.

I want to meet more people who see the passion and drive that I have and who can help me get more placements and opportunities that will allow others to see me shine more.
