Sandra North’s “Same Story ‘Bout a Broken Heart”

Same Story ‘Bout a Broken Heart

Sandra’s new song pushes “country rock” to a new level this year!

Hi Sandra, welcome to VQS! Tell us a little bit about you and your music.

I’m a singer/songwriter from Sweden. I came to America in 2012 and completely fell in love with country music upon traveling cross country with my sister. Came back to study here in 2015 and knew pretty fast that country music was what I should be doing! Graduated from Musicians Institute, started a cover band and eventually connected with other songwriters and started writing my own songs. I have a great teamwork with Juan Abella, songwriter/producer, and feel very fortunate to get to learn from his expertise and experience as we write and record our songs. Our debut single “Try Again” was released this fall and it had a lot of success in Sweden as it was charted for an amazing total of 15 weeks in the radio show “P4 Sörmlands Top 5”. I’m still so thankful for all the support!

” I’ve been through this before and I can do it again! That’s what I want people to take away from this song.” – Sandra North

Congrats on the release! What was your inspiration when you were writing this song?
Thank you! This song means the world to me. I really feel like this is the song I’ve been meaning to write my whole life. It speaks to how I felt so many times in my life and it allows me to get my frustrations out and really sing! I wanted a strong song with power and attitude which Juan beautifully created with the music alongside my frustrated lyrics of disappointments and expectations in love. I wrote them in the moment, when life happens and inspires you and you simply have to write it down.
What is your vision for this song? What lessons would you like to impart with your audience?
To me it’s an empowering song. It’s okay to have a bad day or bad relationships that we dwell on and reflect over for a while. We all have them and deal with that and it usually gets us through even stronger. The lyrics have a bit of a “bitter-pill” to them but with a twist of sarcasm. Meaning, I’ve been through this before and I can do it again! That’s what I want people to take away from this song. I’ve been through a lot in life and hopefully someone can relate and find strength and power through my words as I did with so many of my inspirations and go-to songs over the years.
What is your favorite part of the song?
Since I come from a very traditional pop background I really love the little details in the arrangement that my producer/songwriter Juan Abella, created in the breakdown and intro for example. The distorted voice in the beginning and the echoes and tension in the breakdown. All the layers elevate it to another level all the time in the creating process. I also love the energy and power of the song and that high note at the end that I get to scream out. The harmonica and banjo parts are also outstanding to me. I’m so proud of this song and really hope people will be able to relate and love it just as much as we do!
Anything else we should know about it? Future releases? Upcoming shows?
There’s definitely a lot more in store for 2020. We are finishing up a number of songs as we speak and I am aiming to have my first EP done by early fall. I will also have my next single out in time for summer so stay tuned for a release date soon! There’s a lot in the making right now so be sure to follow on social media for all the updates!
