Skylar, thank you for joining us today at VQS. Take us back in time to how you first fell in love with music.
For as long as I can remember I was infatuated with music.
Despite many childhood memories slipping my mind, I can clearly remember always being drawn towards singing, like it was already a part of my destiny. I loved how instruments and voices could invoke emotions and I love how the soul was displayed without hindrance. I had a song book where I would write melodies and full songs and I loved the freedom in it.
I could create any atmosphere I wanted and tell any story I deemed fit. For me, music was always much more powerful than people gave it credit. I always knew it carried the ability to change people’s mood, to lift their spirit or bring them back to the awareness of the beauty of life when used right.
I remember as a young girl I would sit at my grandfather’s piano and one day I made my mind up fully that I would do what I loved no matter what the price, I would release the music inside of my heart.
What 3 core values do you believe are necessary for success?
1. Authenticity
You will not make it far without being authentic, it’s obvious when someone isn’t really who they portray themselves to be. People are drawn to realness and transparency, and it will always take you further than trying to be something you’re not.
2. Integrity
Integrity is key, without it you will have no credibility and will not make it in the long run. Being able to trust someone and knowing they will make good on their word is one of the most valuable attributes in today’s society.
3. Perseverance
Perseverance has to be one of the most overlooked qualities for someone to have. People who persevere will always be successful because they have made it up in their mind to keep going no matter what until they see the desired end result. So many people quit right before the harvest.
Who have been some of your favorite people/projects to work with?
Although I’ve worked with a variety of industry labels and producers, I would have to say my favorite people to work with are underground producers. I love working with talented people who no one has heard of.
There is something about making music in home studios with people whose only incentive is to make beautiful music. So many people get caught up in the branding, likes, and view counts they often compromise the sound of the music they were once so passionate about creating.
What future opportunities would you like to be involved with?
In the future I would love to be involved with working on movie soundtracks, as well as producing and starring in a visual album. I love pairing every art form like video production, dance, painting, etc. with music.
When multiple artists come together in unity to create something bigger than themselves, I believe heaven itself comes down to watch. I’m also interested in starting a live show where artists of all kinds are featured and perform. I’m excited to see what opportunities the coming years hold.
