Sleep Nation drops a new track!

“Headlights” is a wonderfully crafted tune. The slow, dragged out rhythm is the perfect music bed against Bryan’s raw yet dynamic vocals. Rock and blues are fully alive and kickin’ with Sleep Nation!

Hi Bran, welcome to VQS!
Tell us a little bit about you and your music.

Hello, my name is Bran Merritt. I’m the lead singer and guitarist of the out-of-control rock n roll dynamic duo known as Sleep Nation. Right before Covid hit, Sleep Nation had 2 members leave. Joey Lauretta, the drummer, and I were going back and forth on what we should do.

After many conversations, inside and outside the band, we finally decided to just keep it a 2-piece. We haven’t looked back since.

Congrats on the release! What was your inspiration for this new song?

Released April 01, 2021. My direct influence was creating my own version of “Last Kiss” by Wayne Cochran. I’ll never forget the first time I heard this song. I was driving around with my grandfather, and he was playing a 50s mixtape. The song struck me right in my heart. Fast-forward to when I learned how to write songs. I knew I wanted to take that idea, and re-imagine it.

What lessons would you like to impart with your audience?

It’s a story about loss, forgiveness, and holding on to memories of a life gone too soon. I think the grand idea for this song is forgiveness. It’s an essential piece of the human condition.

What is your favorite part of the song?

The bridge! We took elements of the Eagles and the Bee Gees, and incorporated the high falsetto vocals into the background. Go listen right now and see for yourself.

Anything else we should know about it? Future releases?

Joey and I were contacted by the filmmaker, Michael Butts, who just finished releasing his major debut horror film “Potter’s Ground.” Michael said, “I need a song from you guys for this music video idea.” Joey and I had no idea what to record until shortly after a show.

Lynz from Asylum Radio Productions asked if we had “Spaceman” recorded after one of our shows. She said, “I want to play that song on the air!” So, we haven’t recorded that one yet. She helped us make our decision. We are going into the studio very, very soon, then filming the video afterward.
