Philip, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Born in LA. I’ve been blessed to have a music professor as a dad. Instruments were our toys. Music really spoke to me. My school years were spent in band camp, church choir, and playing guitar in bands. My dad exposed me to a lot of genres: jazz, classical, film score, world, and more. I dabbled with several instruments however, guitar and piano became my favorites.
I was about 13 when I started writing songs and said to myself, “This is what I want to do, make music.” But I didn’t have the money to afford professional recordings. Out of this frustration, I started my quest to learn everything I could about producing and recording music. At 21, while attending the recording program at Musician’s Institute, I began volunteering at several local recording studios and later interned at some of my favorite studios including: Sony, Columbia, and Epic Records.
Pretty soon I found myself producing out of my bedroom studio for local LA artists and placing music in TV/Film including NBC, MTV, Miramax, and Discovery. The time had finally come to launch my company. In 2010, I founded VisionQuest Sound, a recording studio for artists and songwriters. Today, I’m seeing my role change from music producer to content creator to entrepreneur and more. The company has also grown into a media and video production company for artists and brands.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I thought it would be easy! I’ve had my share of bumpy roads: including fires, car accidents, failed relationships, emergency room visits (probably the scariest), ridiculous jobs, embarrassing video posts, etc. What did I do about them? I believe they were meant to be. I learned from my mistakes. It makes us stronger.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about VisionQuest Sound – what should we know?
In 2010, I founded VisionQuest Sound, a boutique recording studio for singers and songwriters in Los Angeles. We help artists to discover and develop their unique vision and sound. I believe everyone has a story to tell but it can be extremely difficult on your own. I learned that music moves us at a deeper and almost hidden level. Through artist development, mentoring, and coaching, we help our clients find their voice and get their music heard by the right people.
We are well partnered with a network of world-class session musicians, vocal coaches, cinematographers, and music organizations. Our technical services include: acoustic recording, mixing, mastering, location sound, video production, VO recording, social media ads, music production.
One of my favorite new adventures for the company is that for the past three years, we’ve been privileged to provide video content documenting the NAMM Show’s music, tech, and culture. VisionQuest Sound is constantly growing, partnering, and learning from other small businesses in our LA community. We believe through teamwork, we grow stronger.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Here are my top 3:
1. Live and breathe with integrity.
2. Bring value to every situation
3. Work from your heart
