“I can’t be overly exaggerated in my day-to-day life, otherwise I wouldn’t have anything. So I save my emotions until I get on stage, where I can be loud, dramatic, where I can cry and where I can make others feel the depths of what I feel,” – Beatriz
Beatriz, thank you for joining us at VisionQuest Sound today. What core values do to believe are necessary for success?
Firstly, it’s important to take some time to contemplate what success means to you in particular. Do you measure it in external recognition? Financial gains? Peace of mind? For me, the latter comes first. And because of that, my number one priority to attain success is to stick to my core values of honesty, integrity and social justice seeking.
That’s why my music and my writing are tools of progress. I intent to use my voice (literal & metaphorical) as a tool to empower myself and others who need to be heard such as underserved communities. If I can lay my head in bed at night with the belief that I’ve contributed positively to create visibility to people who need to be seen, I consider that the epitome of success.
Another, more practical and less self indulgent core values are discipline and self regulation. Maintaining a healthy enough mindset about everything I do, in order to avoid emotional fatigue and negative self talk that can get in the way of achieving my dreams.
How did you get into journalism and what do you love most about it?
Journalism got into me. I remember when I was very little and I would read newspapers with my grandfather. Well, he’d read the news for me! I was fascinated that people would be able to use their words to inform others about the most incredible stories. I remember learning about journalists that would travel the world to report about different cultures, war, events and I was fascinated by the concept of live history happening right then and there. I wanted to be able to contribute in the same way
What future opportunities would you like to be involved with?
So many! I’m always looking towards the future with hopeful eyes. I want to write books, many books, of fiction and non fiction. I also want to be a speaker in panels about artists and creatives who need the extra support. I also want to get my music heard by as many people as I can, perform live festivals and have fun on stage. I want to host podcasts and events for queer youths, especially those interested in becoming artists.
